Chapter Twenty-Three

Stroke of Midnight

Vanya woke with Nash’s heavy weight pinning him to the bed. “Keep silent.”

Vanya froze, every nerve firing at once and sending his heartbeat against his chest. He wanted with a desperation that made his palms sweat to ask what was going on, but he kept still. Nash’s hand on his mouth helped.

Nash’s nose brushed Vanya’s ear. “When I tell you, I want you to roll off the bed and lay flat on the floor. Do not speak.”

Vanya nodded once, trying to swallow against the dread that made him want to shout out loud.

Nash gave him a push. “Now.”

Vanya rolled out from under the sheets and landed on the carpet. He lay still next to the edge of the mattress, wondering if he should get under it, but Nash sounded very specific. He froze where he was, immobile.

Shouts came from downstairs, and he twitched. He started to rise on his hands and knees, and Nash’s voice came again. “Stay down, lostling.”

The minute Vanya realized Nash spoke into his mind, his fear doubled. Several sharp bangs sounded and then a crash of breaking glass. God, was that gunfire? A white light flashed overhead, and Nash shouted something.

Vanya rolled onto his back to see, and Nash’s body loomed over him. He stood, legs braced, a ball of fire between his hands. As Vanya gaped at it, it shot forward, and the window exploded into a thousand pieces. Vanya shouted and rolled away to slam into the wall.

“Up, Vanya. Now!” Nash gestured at him. When Vanya didn’t move quickly enough, Nash reached down and hauled him up by the arm. “Into the hall. Jordan is waiting.”

“Come on, this way.” Jordan stepped in, an enormous handgun in one hand and blood streaking his shirt across the chest. “Let’s go.”

“I don’t want to leave you!” Vanya reached out a hand toward Nash.

“I’m coming—” Nash broke off, turning his head to the window with a snarl. After a moment, he flicked a hand at Jordan. “Take him. Now!”

Jordan surged forward and scooped Vanya against his body and dragged him into the hall. Mike stood at the far end, a heavy shotgun in his hand and two pistols in a double holster across his chest. “Back stairs. Now.”

Jordan propelled Vanya in front of him, and Vanya surrendered, running toward the stairwell as fast as he could make his legs work. He took them two at a time, Mike right in front of him. The three of them emerged in the basement around the corner from the spell room, and Mike held up one hand with a closed fist. Jordan stopped Vanya with a huge hand on his shoulder and shook him gently. Vanya turned, curious, and Jordan held his finger up to his lips. Vanya nodded, a little wildly, and waited. Mike started moving again and hit a release in the wall by the wine cellar. A narrow door swung open, one Vanya had never seen before. Mike stepped in, and Jordan pushed him after. Before Vanya could register what happened, the door slammed shut.
